If you're basing your travel destinations on safety, this list of 15 of the most dangerous U.S. cities might help you decide what to avoid. A study compiled by Neighborhood Scout shows a list of the 100 worst places to travel in 2023.

Here are 15 dangerous U.S. cities you might want to consider not traveling to or through. The complete list of 100 can be seen here. The study was compiled based on crime rates and the likelihood of being a victim of crime. As always, use your judgment when deciding what is a safe city for you to visit.

If you're expecting to see Portland, Chicago, or Los Angeles in the top 15, you're in for a surprise. Alabama and Michigan both have several cities that have high crime rates, so if you're planning on visiting either, it might be worth planning to do some additional research. 

1. Bessemer AL

Bessemer is located 15 miles southwest of Birmingham.
