All bad things must come to an end: RIP Motley Crue

February 15, 2016 by Jill 12 Comments

I was sitting at my computer working when I saw eight words flash across my screen. Ads are everywhere and the stalker-ish Internet always knows what kind of stuff we like to buy, right?

All bad things must come to an end.

It was an ad for the farewell Mötley Crüe tour stopping in my city that weekend. I’m admittedly not very good about keeping up with the happenings of my favorite metal bands. I could blame mom-brain, soccer practice, Pinterest, whatever, but I didn’t know Mötley Crüe was breaking up. I actually wasn’t sure if they were still making music. My playlist and I are stuck together in 2008.

All bad things must come to an end.

Band breakup, or ticket sales-boosting tactic? I look at farewell tours as a prelude to reunion tours, you know? Bands break up all the time: falling outs, arrests, stints in rehab, egos getting in the way of making music. They go their separate ways, and then bam: Here comes the highly anticipated reunion tour and/or album.

I blame my kids for not being savvy on what’s up in the world of music. I have no idea what’s new and hot, but I can sing along to the theme songs of whatever’s hot on Nick Jr. I don’t have satellite radio in the minivan because I’d never listen to it. My passengers are usually clamoring to watch a DVD or putting out their own special brand of loudness. Everything about this story screams hipster, doesn’t it?

If I had to give you a list of my favorite badass ’80s metal bands, Mötley Crüe would be number one. I’d seen them live twice. Man, I miss the late ’80s and early ’90s when rockers with crazy long hair and leopard print spandex tights were cool.

All bad things must come to an end.

This was practically an engraved invitation from Nikki Sixx himself disguised as an ad on Facebook. I told my husband we needed to call the sitter and buy tickets.

Going to a metal concert in my 40s is a lot different than it was in my 20s. I didn’t plan my outfit days in advance; I put on what was clean and seasonally appropriate half an hour before we left. I wasn’t concerned with how close my seat was to the stage; I wanted to be able to see without getting trampled by crazy girls trying to throw their panties at the singer. Do people still do that?

Going to a concert in my 40s is all about remembering to get cash for the sitter and scoping out restaurants with early-bird specials so we could eat beforehand, because after the concert would be past our bedtime. It was different, and yet not. The excitement I felt as the hours before the show ticked by was the same. I listened to my favorite ’80s metal and reminisced about my first two Crüe concerts, one of which I don’t remember all that well, if we’re being completely honest.

All bad things come to an end. #RIPMOTLEYCRUE

On the way to the venue, my husband and I talked about our kids (because of course we did) and whether we should replace our water heater now or wait until next year. If that doesn’t scream Decade of Decadence, well, I’m not really sure what does.

I was prepared to rock out, be entertained and see a great show. I was not disappointed, but it became very clear, very quickly that this was not a hyped-up gimmicky farewell tour. The Jumbotron flashed suggested hashtags for tweets and ‘grams–my, how things have changed–and this one leapt out at me:

#RIPMOTLEYCRUE

I’m not sure how many times “for the last time” was spoken during the two-hour show. Vince, Tommy and Sixx all gave little snippets and insights injected throughout the show. Using flair and pyrotechnics, they made it crystal clear that this was goodbye. RIP. They played their asses off, and if any of that was contrived, well, color me fooled.

As I sang along and strummed my air guitar in my seat (that’s right: no shame), the melancholy crept in. Mötley Crüe has been playing together for 34 years. I’ve been listening to them for just about that long. Some parts of the ’80s are fuzzy, but I remember that day in 1983 when I bought Too Fast for Love on vinyl. I’d dance around my bedroom singing into my hairbrush, fantasizing about how Nikki Sixx with his bad boy ways would sweep me off my feet, and I’d live this glam, jet-set life in miniskirts and stiletto heels.

All bad things come to an end.

The last show was on New Year’s Eve, and I’m bummed and dejected. Not because I’ll miss their music, Mötley Crüe peaked a long time ago. They’ve already produced their best stuff. I can hear it anytime I want on my playlist stuck in 2008.

Vince, Tommy and company are getting older, softer. They have wrinkles, as do most of their fans, me included. Vince Neil doesn’t rock the same body he did in 1988, but neither do I. No shame in that.

If Mötley Crüe were to continue on the concert circuit, there would come a time when they’d stop selling out large venues. There’s something depressing about seeing a band you loved in your youth play at county fairs or casinos. Trust me, I know: I saw Bret Michaels play at Rib America in Missouri in 2010.

So, props to the Crüe for rocking off into the sunset with class, but they’ve made me face my own mortality in the process, which is the last thing I expected to think about while driving home from a rock concert. While it was fun to relive my glory days, there’s a part of me that feels like a little piece of my youth was carried away by the wind as the last note of “Home Sweet Home” played.

Music can bring on powerful nostalgia and a full-spectrum range of emotions: highs, lows and in-betweens. I’m glad those eight words popped up on my screen that day.

All bad things must come to an end.

Indeed they do. I think they said it best: Seasons must change—separate paths, separate ways.

Cheers, Mötley Crüe. It doesn’t look like you’re going away mad, but you are going away. Thanks for 34 awesome years. I even remember most of them. I’m sure I’m not alone in that.

I love seeing my favorite bands as an adult. I totally agree, seats up in back, “who cares.” Jeans, tee little makeup. Next to me was my 20 something daughter, when we saw Kiss. Although, they may still come out to play. I’ll miss my favorite bands from back in the day. I doubt I see many farewell tours but, the ones I do I’ll rock, then head back home to bed….

Awesome post! I saw them for my 15th and final time back in November of 2014, on the first leg of the final tour, and it was a highly emotional experience for me. Their music has been there through all the highs and lows of my life, and their live shows were always the highlight of my year. It’s crazy to think that that chapter is closed, but that’s the way it goes. Things change. We change. But the memories stay the same.

Fact: I felt the same way going to the last Jimmy Buffett concert. We walked around, laughing at all the antics.
Once upon a time, I would have been in the MIDDLE of all the antics.
Jimmy has aged, the Coral Reefers have aged, and so have we – but most of the crowd still parties like they are 20.

We have tickets again this year, and have invited my BIL and his girlfriend to come along. They are HUGE fans and despite being older than us, still party hard.

So when I was lining up my babysitter and asked the hubs what time I should schedule him (the sitter), my husband said “Four sounds good. That will give us time to eat first.”

I have a feeling that I will be dropping off his brother and troupe, because tailgating for 45 minutes before Buffett is NOT how it is done. #goneold

Funny that I can afford seats in the front, but I’m now worried if it will be too loud. I went to see ZZ Top a few years ago and all us older people jumped up at the first note and sang and danced all night long with them. But when I went to see Van Morrison, he was just a cranky jerk who refused to play anything that wasn’t off his most recent album. When I first saw him, almost 30 years ago, he was much more fun—or was that just all the booze he was drinking on stage?

Wow, what a cranky jerk! I’d have regretted spending my money! Although…if I could have a do-over, I’d have gotten a little closer to the stage when The Crue came to town…
      Thanks for reading!

My kids and I spent a week on Florida's Emerald Co My kids and I spent a week on Florida's Emerald Coast in June. I've gotten a lot of ❓about traveling to Florida - and traveling in general during these pandemic times - so I'll try to answer a few and give some good information about Destin/Fort Walton Beach.
.
It's easy to social distance on the gorgeous beaches. June/July is their busy season so you will see people but it's easy to maintain distance on the beach & in the water.
.
If you want to eat in a restaurant, there are plenty of choices. We preferred places w/ open air seating & there are lots. Obviously, the seafood is fresh & amazing. If you are a 🍣 person, you'll be in heaven.
.
All of the typical water activities - surfing, snorkeling, scuba - are still happening - and you can check each individual tour company's COVID-19 policy. We did a tour with Destin Snorkel that I highly recommend for beginner snorkelers or kids. It's easy to keep your space in the water but impossible to maintain the six-feet rule on the boat. You can wear a 😷 if you choose but masks were not required at the time of my visit and I didn't see very many people wearing them.
.
My general pandemic travel tips:
1️⃣don't travel if you're sick or showing symptoms. 2️⃣road trips over flying.
3️⃣condo or vacation home over hotel.
4️⃣outdoor activities where you can maintain social distance.
5️⃣bring/make your own food or order takeout. If you eat out, look for open-air eateries, and places that are committed to reducing spread (i.e. single-use or QR code menus).
6️⃣if you're not comfortable, don't travel. This is a really personal decision & it's going to vary from family to family & location to location.

This guy turned 10 20 days ago. He "didn't want to This guy turned 10 20 days ago. He "didn't want to make it a big deal." We went to eat Chinese food - with the stipulation we didn't tell the server it was his birthday and then went to the beach the following day. We stayed in Port Aransas down on the Texas Gulf Coast and spent the next few days with our toes in the sand.
.
Like all the birthdays this year, Z's entry into the double digits probably wasn't what he imagined or what he wanted. He'd been asking for a party - which we usually don't do and earlier in the year, we said we'd think about it. After the onset of the pandemic he'd talked about inviting one friend to play laser tag or go to an arcade and we were looking at doing that when the COVID rates went up and our state enforced new restrictions...which I'm not complaining about but it is hard to make a 10-year-old fully understand this stuff.
.
We are in that sweet pocket where I can glimpse the four-year-old and the man he'll be someday.
.
He didn't want "to make a big deal" out of his birthday but it's still a big deal to me. And y'all...time is a thief and I don't like it. 😫😫

Sometimes, you need to slow down a little bit. Tra Sometimes, you need to slow down a little bit. Trading in my SUV for a golf cart this week and my kids are trading screen time for splashing in the river. Jellystone has a posted speed limit of 5 1/2 mph so we're hitting pause on life in the fast lane. Just kidding. We don't live in the fast lane but that doesn't mean we didn't need to go at a slower pace for a few days. Jellystone is an awesome place to do just that - although there's a lot to do here if you want to keep busier than we've been keeping.

Today I'm answering some of your questions about o Today I'm answering some of your questions about our trip to Brazosport TX. You can save this post to reference later.
.
❓Where/What is Brazosport? Brazosport is the region of TX that encompasses Lake Jackson, Clute, Surfside, Quintana and Freeport. All very small towns w/the exception of Lake Jackson. Brazosport is about 65 miles south of Houston.
.
❓What are the beaches like? Typical TX beaches. Darker, sand w/high clay content. If you want white sand and clear turquoise water you'll have to go further southeast into Alabama & the Florida panhandle. Super uncrowded. Water was pretty calm when we went although that varies w/ weather. Very easy to maintain social distance. There are four different beaches. We went to Surfside Beach & Follet's Beach. Surfside requires a permit to drive on the beach and Follet's is free. Follet's, IMO, is a better beach all around. Not a lot of stores/amenities near the beaches so bring what you need.
.
❓Are there other things to do besides go to the beach? While the biggest reason to visit this area, IMO, is the beach, there are some other things to do, including two things I put in the DO NOT MISS category. ➡️ for some sneak peeks. Wanna know what they are? Stay tuned for more info about the 2020 Texas Travel Planner that Texas Travel Talk is debuting soon. Brazosport is part of a guide on how to safely and responsibly road trip in the state of Texas this summer and I can't wait to see it all come together.

Whether to travel or not right now is a super personal decision but stay tuned for some tips to travel safely within Texas. #TxRoadTrip20
